About PHSAD

PHSAD is a student organization committed to creating and fostering a sense of community and collective responsibility primarily among African American students in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan. PHSAD also provides a familial environment for students as they pursue their degrees at the School of Public Health.

The organization strives to maintain diversity by having members with backgrounds in each of the academic disciplines as well as other schools within the University. Through work with other organizations, PHSAD has also helped foster relationships among peers that will last a lifetime.

We Strive….
  • To create an atmosphere wherein academic and professional excellence can coincide with minority interestss
  • To disseminate and exchange information regarding minority concerns in the field of Public Health
  • To serve as a network and support system for educational and professional purposes and to provide a platform for expression for minority concerns and issues
  • To take necessary steps to eradicate discrimination in the School of Public Health as it appears based on race, gender and/or ethnicity
  • To raise the level of African American student recruitment, admission and retention in the School of Public Health

PHSAD Executive Board Team Members

Charniece Tisdale, President
Charniece is a second year student in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education. Her specific academic interests include health inequities, program management and evaluation. She is from Chicago, Illinois. She attended DePaul University where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Health Services. She enjoys traveling, exploring new restaurants and reading fiction.


Tomi Ogundimu, Vice President
Tomi is a second year student in the Department of Health Management and Policy. She attended Michigan State University where she received a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Biology, with a specialization in Bioethics, Humanities, and Society. While she is unclear about her exact plans after graduation, she strives to have an impact in the area of quality improvement, access to care, and elimination of disparities. She enjoys dancing, karaoke, playing soccer, eating chocolate chip cookies, and re-reading Harry Potter novels.

Yodit Beru, Treasurer
Yodit is a second year student in the Department of Health Management and Policy.  She is from Silver Spring, Maryland and received her undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland in Physiology and Neurobiology.  She hopes to pursue a career in global or minority health policy and is interested in issues pertaining to HIV/AIDS.  She is a big fan of black and white photography and gets to the darkroom whenever she has a chance.


Janika Wilson, Co-Conference Chair
Janika is a second year student in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education from Brooklyn, New York. She is interested in adolescent health and program evaluation. She studied athletic training at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Outside of school she trains in Capoeira.




Folasade “Sade” Odeniyi, Co-Conference Chair
Sade is a first year student in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education. She is originally from Philadelphia Pennsylvania and has her A.B in History and Science and a Certificate in Health Policy from Harvard University.  Her main interests are global health and international development. She hopes to be involved in developing sustainable health programs in the developing world.


Nicole Dickelson, Communication Relations Chair
Nicole is a first year student in the Department of Health Management and Policy. She is originally from Washington, DC. Her primary interests are the elimination of ethnic and racial health disparities through increased racial diversity in healthcare management workforces, and the continued improvement of cultural competence training for healthcare workforces of all types.  She is a graduate of Spelman College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology (with Phi Beta Kappa honors). Her hobbies include traveling, cooking and engaging in community service.

Akofa Bonsi, Social and Community Service Chair
Akofa is a second year MHSA student in the Department of Health Management and Policy. Her academic interests include health disparities, academic medial centers, organizational structures and governance. She is from Auburn Alabama and received her Bachelors in Medical Ethics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. When she has free time she enjoys event planning.



Allison Shelton, Fundraising Management Chair
Allison is a first year student in the Department of Health Management and Policy. She is primarily interested in healthcare management. She is from Evanston, Illinois and received her Bachelors degree from Emory University. Her personal interests include pilates, yoga, jogging and working with children.
